Companions

As the story progresses, the player will encounter random NPC characters that have unique personalities and stories.
They all have their own reasons to be in the Underground and it’s up to Fred to see if they will see them sought to.
If the player manages to maintain Fred’s level of Sanity to an acceptable standard events are trigger which allows for the possibility of acquiring these characters as companions on your travels through the game.
If the character see’s that Fred has turned and given in to his Insanity they will not want to join you. (And in extreme cases of Sanity Loss they may even attack.)
Companions assist you in firefights, unlock special areas that only they can decipher for bonuses and allow for a deep character building experience as they interact with Fred.

Environments

The start of the game is set in the New Zealand Jungles, before exploring into the caverns.
As you progress deeper into the Underground, you will experience different environments with varying colour schemes.

Each designated area with have a set colour pallet to help the player keep track of where they are, as well as key attributes like Volcanic streams, Temples, glowing fungi infested chasms, underground rivers and lakes and even cliff side settlements.

Assets

In “Fred” the game is set in the year 2009, so all assets in the game are modern spare for a few years.
There is a set range of weapons in the game that fill a certain role, (i.e one Auto and one Semi Machine gun) but they keep their purpose throughout the game.
Only through Salvaging weapons can be upgraded.

Fred stores weapons on the sides of his Backpack.

Climbing gear that Fred uses to traverse the game world are always on his person.
His climbing ability can only be improved by increasing the Survival aspect.
Climbing gear cannot break.

Final Concept

This is Fred’s final design.
I wanted to keep his design simple as this will be the base on which the player starts the game, leaving him
a blank canvas for customisation.

Fred started with a traditional jacket, but I left it off to remain as an obtainable item.
Leaving him as an easy template to build on top of for the customisation aspect through Sanity, Survival and Salvaging.
